Radon is a tastless, odourless and invisible radioactive gas that results from decaying Uranium, and is a leading cause of Lung Cancer.
Radon filters up from the ground and into the air. It can enter enter buildings through openings where the buildings contact the ground surface. In the outdoors, Radon is diluted to low levels. Inside buildings, however, Radon can build up to harmful, concentrated levels. Breathing increased levels of Radon increases a person's chances of developing lung cancer. In fact Radon is linked to 16% of the lung cancer deaths. It is the leading cause of lung cancer in Non-smokers, and the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking.

Who is at Risk?
Everyone is at risk for radon inhaltion, and any building that has contact with the ground has the potential to have high radon levels, including house, apartments, schools, daycares, warehouses and commercial spaces.
A Radon Test can be completed as a Real Estate Test, which would be aas little as a 3 day test. This test is an unreliable test for accuracy. This test does not allow for fluctutions in the Radon Levels that will occur in your home. The next level of testing would be a 30 - 90 day test. This test is a more accurate level of testing. This level of testing removes helps to remove the peaks and valleys of the varying levels of Radon Gas that will be in your home. The best level of testing is a 90+ day test. This test is the most accurate level of testing.

There a re 3 basic Types of Radon Mitigation Systems
1) Active Sub-Slab Depressurization,
This method is the most common method of Radon Reduction in Exisitng Homes. With this Solution a Pipe is Installed through the Foundation Floor to an Exterior and Through the Venting To the Exterior of the Home. A Fan is Specialized Fan is Then Installed Inline to the System to Pull the Radon and Ventilate Where it can Dilute in the Exterior Air. The Active Sub Slab System Being The Most Common in Exixting Homes.
2) A Crawl Space Sub-Membrane
When dealing with Crawl Spaces the First step is to Cut the Source of Radon Off. This is Completed by INstalling a Barrier of High Density Reinforced Poly over the Entire Floor Surface Area and Partially up the Exterior Wall. A Radon Specific Fan is Then Installed to Mitigate as Best as Possible the Soil Gases now Encapsulated under the Poly to the Exterior. Vents in the Exterior of a Crawk Space do Not MItigate the Radon Levels to Be Lower and Effective Method of Mitigation. Tis is Basically Installing a Pool Liner Method in The Basment Area. This Method is Also Common in Basements and Crawl Spaces woth Dirt Floors.
3) Sump Pit Radon Systems
These Radon Mitigation Systems Utilize Exisitng Rain Water Drainage Systems. These are Periodicaly Found In Homes. But Not Common. With the Draiange Pathway Being an Efficient way of Moving Air UNderneath The Basement Floor, These are Mostly Around the Exterior of the Foundation at the Footings Level.
Yes, the levels of Radon are covered in your new home warranty. The home must be under 200 Becquerel determined by a long term test. This test must be completed by a certified Radon Professional. This test also must be 90 + Day Test Term. The Home Must Still be Inside the 7 Year Tarion Applicable Time Frame. If This Test is Completed With Results Above the 200 Becquerel Limit the Home Is Considered to Fall in the Unsafe Category to Reside in.
The Mitigation Process in Most Cases Takes a Full Day to Complete.
